Overview

What is Zirconia Crowns?

Zirconia crowns are full-coverage restorations made entirely from zirconium dioxide — a ceramic material that is stronger than porcelain yet translucent enough to match natural teeth. Unlike metal-based crowns, zirconia has no dark margin at the gum line, no metal shadow through the tooth, and is completely biocompatible. It is the material of choice for modern restorative dentistry at Dentist & Dentist.

The Process

How It Works

01
Tooth Preparation

The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic to create room for the crown. Precise preparation is critical to the final fit.

02
Digital Impression

A digital scan is taken and sent to our lab. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the final restoration is made.

03
Lab Fabrication

The zirconia crown is milled and hand-characterised to match your tooth's shape, shade and translucency.

04
Trial & Bonding

The crown is tried in for fit and aesthetics before being permanently cemented with high-strength dental adhesive.

Common Questions

FAQs

Is zirconia stronger than metal?

Yes. Zirconia has a flexural strength of 900–1200 MPa — stronger than many metal alloys — while looking completely natural.

Will it match my other teeth?

Yes. Zirconia can be layered and characterised to match the translucency, shade and surface texture of your natural teeth exactly.

How long does a zirconia crown last?

With good oral hygiene, zirconia crowns last 15–20+ years — significantly longer than older porcelain or metal options.

Is there a dark line at the gum?

No — that dark margin is caused by metal substructure. Zirconia is metal-free, so the crown looks completely natural at the gum line.
