A dental implant is a titanium or zirconia post placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. A crown — matched to your natural teeth — is then attached on top. The result is indistinguishable from a natural tooth in both appearance and function. Implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing the bone loss that occurs with dentures or bridges. The implant post is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. The procedure typically takes 45–90 minutes.
Over 8–12 weeks, the implant fuses with your jawbone. A temporary restoration may be placed during this period.
Once integrated, a zirconia or porcelain crown is attached — colour matched, shaped and adjusted to your bite.

Basal (or cortical) implants anchor into the cortical bone rather than the spongy bone, making them suitable for patients with bone loss who are not candidates for traditional implants. They can often be loaded immediately.
With proper care, dental implants last a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacing after 15–20 years.
