Why Dental Implants Are the Gold Standard for Missing Teeth

Dental implants look, feel and function like natural teeth — and with proper care, they last a lifetime. Here's why they're the preferred solution for most patients.

When a tooth is lost — whether to decay, fracture, or gum disease — the options for replacing it have expanded dramatically over the past two decades. But among all available solutions, dental implants remain the gold standard. Here's why our patients consistently choose them, and why Dr. Omar Sheikh recommends them for most cases of tooth loss.

What Makes an Implant Different?

Unlike bridges, which rely on neighbouring teeth for support, or dentures, which rest on the gum surface, a dental implant replaces the tooth root itself. A titanium post is placed directly into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration. A crown is then placed on top — matched in colour, shape and size to your surrounding teeth.

The result is a tooth replacement that is functionally and aesthetically indistinguishable from a natural tooth.

Five Reasons Implants Outperform the Alternatives

What About Basal Implants?

Patients who have experienced significant bone loss — often the case with long-term denture wear — have traditionally been told they are not candidates for implants. Basal (cortical) implants change this. They anchor into the denser cortical bone rather than the spongy cancellous bone, making them viable even in cases of severe bone loss, and they can often be loaded immediately.

At Dentist & Dentist, Dr. Omar Sheikh evaluates each patient individually. If traditional implants aren't suitable, basal implants are often the solution.

The best tooth replacement is the one that most closely replicates what was lost. A dental implant does exactly that — root and all.
